Local Meat Availability

I've had a few new locavores asking where they can buy their meat locally.  This is also a chance for me to share the benefits of grass fed/finished beef:
  • Lower in fat
  • Contains a healthier balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids
  • Higher in Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA), beta carotene, and vitamins A and E
  • Is high in branch chain amino acids
  • Has a decreased risk of e.Coli bacteria, due to low pH of first stomach
  • Most local farmers do not use antibiotics in the feed and typically no hormones are added
If you want to know more, go rent/buy/borrow or beg for the movie Food, Inc.  It's also important you feel comfortable with the farmer and farm you are buying your meat from.  Transparency is key.  Meet the farmer, don't be afraid to ask questions, and take a tour the farm.

So here are the farms that have responded with what they have available.  If I hear from more farms, I will pass the info along!

Jenness Farm offers goat meat (ground, greek sausage, kabob, stew, liver, kidney) and all different cuts of pork (larger quantities available upon request).  You can buy their meat at their shop in Nottingham, NH (directions at their website) and a selection will be available at the Seacoast Eat Local Winter Farmers' Markets.

New Roots Farm has pasture-raised heritage breed pork available at all of the upcoming Seacoast Eat Local Winter Markets.  A word of advice, arrive early, they typically sell out in just a few hours, if not less!

Pinewoods Yankee Farm in Lee, NH has ground, stew, rib and sirloin steaks along with a couple of roasts.  I love her ground beef.  You can contact her at esawtelles @ aol . com.

Sea View Farms, LLC in Rye, NH has a variety of cuts of buffalo - steaks, ground, patties and sausage, all individually wrapped and frozen. They expect to have more meat like stew meat, roasts, ribs, and kabobs to offer in the months to come.  Also available this month are 1/4 shares of buffalo.  The buffalo price list is available online.  This is a great way to save a bit of money by buying in bulk. They also have whole chickens for $3.05/lb. Each chicken is about 5 -5 1/2 lbs and frozen.     Please contact the farm directly (contact info on the website) to place your order and schedule a pick-up time.

Lasting Legacy Farm in Barrington sells pork and beef cuts at the Seacoast Eat Local Winter Markets.  Wendy is currently taking pre-orders for legs of lamb (think Easter) and is also taking pre-orders for sides of beef for the 2010 year.  More information regarding pre-orders can be found on the website.

Brookford Farm in Rollinsford has chicken, beef, and lamb at their farm store as well as a selection of meat at the Seacoast Eat Local Winter Markets.  They also have some of the best raw dairy products on the seacoast.

Yellow House Farm sells their heritage breed chicken and duck meat and eggs at the Seacoast Eat Local Winter Markets.

*This just in from Seacoast Eat Local:

The General Butler Farm of Nottingham has a wonderful selection of grass fed meats just in from the butcher.  Please call in advance, or e-mail, to make appointments to purchase your aged, locally raised, grass fed, non-antibiotic, no growth hormone, natural beef.  Cattle raised as nature intended, on grass and grass alone!  Checks or cash, can’t accept credit cards.
