Locavore Gift Idea #11

Today is one BIG reminder to get our Saturday morning and head over to Wentworth Greenhouse for Seacoast Eat Local's "before Christmas" amazing farmers' market.  There are over 55 vendors signed up making this the largest winter farmers' market to date.

One of the features of the market I wanted to highlight is the Seacoast Eat Local table of goods.  Seacoast Eat Local sells products from northern New England not otherwise available at the farmers’ market to help support the organization of the markets.  These things include from organic apple cider vinegar, sunflower oil, gift certificates, and our new tote bags will be available at the Seacoast Eat Local market booth. Sewall’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is unpasteurized and comes in two sizes. Henry’s Organic Sunflower Oil also comes in two sizes and is from Maine.  They also offer gift certificates in $5 increments, a terrific gift for coworkers, kid’s teaches, neighbors—everyone appreciates great food!  Fill up their new tote bag with some local treats for an amazing gift.

There are so many exciting things that I am simply going to send you over to the Seacoast Eat Local blog so you can read through the upcoming farmers' market posts.  Read up on the discounted meats, $4# select lobsters, Christmas greens and trees, artisan gifts, special parking places, and of course, baked goods!  I hope you'll take a moment to swing through the farmers' market, especially if you've never visited a winter market before.  Buy local this Christmas season.

Oh and don't forget about Nick's heritage breed turkeys available at this market.  After the market, be sure to finish up your Christmas shopping at Lucy's Art Emporium down the road.

Winter Farmers' Market December 4th in Exeter

Well my CPU is mended and now just needs to be picked up!  But the latest wrinkle to interrupt my blogging is throwing out my back right around Thanksgiving.  I am incredibly grateful to Tina of Pinewoods Yankee Farm (love their grass fed beef, contact her to arrange pickup some delicious meat cuts!) for recommending the most fantastic chiropractor, Dr. Matthew Hotz, in Lee who opened his doors just for me on Friday.  Truly I am proud to live in S. NH, I absolutely love the community in which I live.  Everyone is so giving of their time, knowledge and experience, I couldn't be more blessed to live where I do.

So without spending too much time sitting, which still doesn't feel 100% pleasant, let me get right to the point.  Here's the latest press release from Sara Zoë Patterson of Seacoast Eat Local regarding the upcoming farmers' market this coming weekend in Exeter, NH!

Winter Farmers’ Market in Exeter, December 4

The outside summer markets are over and it's time to turn our thoughts inside with the first Exeter Winter Farmers' Market of the 2010-2011 season. The holiday season is in full swing and eating healthy, local food with every meal is more than possible. Come and visit the farmers' market community for a soul warming Saturday overflowing with irresistible food and food gifts for the season.

Saturday, December 4, 40 farmers, fishermen and food producers will be in the cafeteria of the new Exeter High School in Exeter, NH from 10am-2pm, selling their meats, cheeses, milk, eggs, vegetables, fish, prepared foods, baked goods, honey and maple syrup! You can find a full list of participating vendors and the products they will be selling at www.seacoasteatlocal.org. The new Exeter High School is located at 1 Blue Hawk Drive, or 315 Epping Road for GPS.

Seacoast area farmers and food producers have expanded their offerings in response to customers seeking fresh, wholesome, sustainable foods and this season’s winter markets include a wide diversity of local products. Shoppers can look forward to filling their tote bags with a wide variety of vegetables including salad greens, broccoli, bok choi, kale, radishes, cabbage, lettuce, winter squash, carrots, potatoes, turnips, onions, garlic, and parsnips. Local, sustainable meats and seafood will be for sale such as beef, pork, chicken, lamb, duck, goat, turkey and lobster as well as dairy products including eggs, milk, and cheeses. Honey, maple syrup, prepared foods and baked goods round out the farmers’ market making the market a one-stop shopping opportunity for local food.

Share the harvest

As in year’s past, each Seacoast Eat Local winter farmers’ market will feature an area food pantry collecting donations of food. You are encouraged to purchase fresh foods to donate; pantries are seeing a sharp increase in demand for their services and those in need are also eager to eat wholesome foods. Potatoes, carrots, onions, salad greens – any product available for sale at the market would make a welcome donation. Financial donations are welcome and will be used to increase purchases of local food for the pantry. Farmers generously donate hundreds of pounds of foods at each market and the combined efforts of shoppers and farmers makes a significant positive impact in our community.

Here's an update!  Eastman's Fish Market is offering a promotion for customers at the Winter Farmers' Market this Saturday December 4, "If you bring a copy of your favorite fish recipe we'll give you $2.00 off your purchase of $12.00 or more!"

Winter is upon us!

Hello!  Yes I am alive...but still with a dead computer!  I am enjoying the time away from the cyber hub bub even if I do still check in now and again on my smart phone, though it's not the same as a desktop computer.  I definitely can't assemble a blog post from my phone.

I am popping on to share with you all the upcoming Winter Farmers' Market information.  To the right of my blog I have updated the market list and now all the winter markets are accounted for.  Also, all the cities listed are linked to their respective websites.

Upcoming this Saturday are Northwood, Newmarket, Rye, Salem, York, ME, and Rollinsford winter/fall markets.  On Sunday, Derry and Newburyport will have their markets.  Plus craft fairs abound all weekend, so don't tell me you're bored this weekend!  :)

What's For Dinner Wednesday 9/22

Yet another yummy What's for Dinner menu available at the upcoming Rye Farmers' Market!

This week’s menu starts with Peach Salsa – the peaches are so sweet now at the end of their season to put on cereal or yogurt or to make salsa!  As the peach season ends, the apple season begins, so the entree includes cinnamon peaches with broiled pork chops and a vegetable medley.  With only a few more weeks left in the summer market, now is the time to be cooking with as many local, fresh vegetables as you can!  And dessert, of course, has to include apples – it’s a new twist on Apple Crisp.  Quick, easy and delicious.

Also at this weeks Rye Farmers' Market is their Second Annual Apple Pie Baking contest!  To enter you just show up with your pie by 3:00 and judging is at 4:00.  Yum, yum, yum!

The Rye Farmers' Market is open from 2-5:30pm and located at the Rye Town Parking Lot to the right of the Rye Congregational Church where Central and Washington Roads meet.

"Healthy Living" Northwood Farmers Market

I'm sorry I've been non-existent, I'll update later with what I'm up to, but this just came in from Dagne Goodwin of Amelia Mae's and I thought I'd pass it along!

"Healthy Living Day" today at the Northwood Farmers Market (3:00PM to 6:30PM).

We will have an Herbalist to chat with, a yoga instructor to learn from and the new gym opening in town will be there too. And we'll even have some personal trainers.

Healthy Living definitely starts at the Farmers Market with wonderful vegetables, all natural soups, locally made goat cheese, locally raised chickens and of course their eggs. In today's world of uncertainty isn't it great to talk with the person who is actually raising the food that you eat!

For an extra special treat Amelia Mae's will have BBQ Pulled Chicken Sandwiches with Coleslaw and Baked Beans for just $7.00 for take-out. You won't find a meal like that at any fast food restaurant and you can't beat the price.

The Northwood Farmers Market is located on the corner of Rt 4 and Rt 43 in Northwood NH, smack dab in the middle between Concord and Portsmouth. You won't regret the trip, honest!

What's for Dinner Wednesday 8/4

Yet another tasty What's for Dinner menu available at the upcoming Rye Farmers' Market!

This week is a perfect summer meal - simple to make and requiring a minimum of heat! Start with a cool, fresh summer salad to go with Creole Crab Cakes and grilled corn on the cob while sipping chilled Cayuga White wine. Then finish with a cool Cafe au Lait Pudding and iced coffee.

Also, don't forget to check out the featured vendor this week!

The featured vendor is Buzz Bomb World Spice Blends, which was started 4 years ago as a business but nearly all the blends have been used by owner, proprietor, Steven Scaturro for over a decade.  Two years ago, a complete line of gluten-free items was incorporated into Steve’s product line.  Both the Certified Organic Spice Blends and the gluten-free products are manufactured in small quantities to ensure maximum flavor and freshness. The spice blends have been developed to be multipurpose.  Most commercially available products have a high salt content, limiting them to use for grilled meats.  Buzz Bomb World Spice Blends are ground very fine and have a reduced salt content.  They can be used for dips, salad dressings, meat, chicken, fish, veggies, popcorn, soups and stews, rice dishes, sprinkled over nachos, mixed with mayo to add a new depth of flavor to your sandwich and more!
The Rye Farmers' Market is open from 2-5:30pm and located at the Rye Town Parking Lot to the right of the Rye Congregational Church where Central and Washington Roads meet.

A Weekend in Pictures

This weekend I mixed it up a bit.  I went to two Maine farmers' markets, the Kennebunk Farmers' Market and Saco Farmers' Market.  It was fun to see new markets and different farms and people!  I also bought my squash, tomato, pepper, squash and eggplant seedlings this weekend!  The garden is coming right along!  Here are pics from the markets and my garden...

Kennebunk Farmers' Market:

Saco Farmers' Market:
My garden, freshly watered and planted!
I have three new 4'x4' raised beds.  One contains 25 strawberry plants and 80 onions!  The other two contain a mix of things and I still have the original two 4'x8' beds.  I have planted out my tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers.  Some tomato varieties I am growing are Oregon Spring, Black Sea Man, Super Sweet 100, Sun Gold, Bush Beefsteak and San Marzano.  Some of the pepper plants I'm growing include Mohawk Sweet Bell, Cubanelle, Pimento, Jalapeno, Red Ace and Lady Bell.

Other things in my garden include Swiss chard, chives, broccoli, cabbage, peas, nasturtium, at least 150 onions, zucchini, summer squash, spaghetti squash, cucumbers, and green beans.  I'm sure I forgot something!  I can't wait to be getting those nice summertime harvests!  I still want to get some potatoes going like I did last year, just trying to find the perfect bag!  I also have one Jerusalem artichoke I need to replant outside (and far away from) my raised beds.  This week I have lots of repotting to do as I've picked up a bunch of herbs and I'd like to trying a few tomatoes and eggplants in containers as well.  The gardening never stops!

How was your weekend and how is your garden growing?
