Why join a CSA and other ramblings

First off, happy almost Valentine's day! Anybody have something fun planned? How about checking out the CSA Fair being held at the Portsmouth Library? Isn't that romantic? Well it is in the morning so you still have all evening to woo you significant other! Here are some great reasons why you should join a CSA (Adapted from Monica Goldberg's, "16 Reasons to Join a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm" 2002). (I do realize this emphasis organic produce, which I would highly encourage you to seek out at the fair).

Better flavor: Organic vegetables have a rich and full flavor. That's why many chefs select organic food for their recipes. Since organic farming nourishes the soil, the food nourishes our palates. Better tasting means you'll eat more veggies and eat some that you may not have liked before.

More Nutritious: Freshly picked organic produce grown without pesticides and sprays are more nutritious than conventionally grown vegetables.

Safer Food: Your produce comes directly from your farmer. No risk of your food getting damaged or spoiled due to long-distance shipping. Most CSA's grow using organic methods. Organic produce is grown without pesticides or sprays. Pesticides are poisons and can be harmful to humans.

Save Money: CSA's offer high quality produce at below retail cost. The money goes directly to the farmer instead of paying distributors and trucking companies, and it stays your local economy.

Save Time: You pick up a box or bag of fresh vegetables already packed for you. No shopping hassles. Easy pick up at another member's home or on the farm. Select a convenient drop off site near work or home.

Selection: Farmers grow more vegetable varieties than found at the grocery store. You'll enjoy and discover more vegetable varieties than you might otherwise buy.

Farmer to Family Connection: A CSA is a relationship between a rural farmer and an urban family. The farm helps bring families to the land. It serves as a rural gathering place for urban families to share together events on the farm.

Fun: Experience fun on the farm with harvest festivals, dinners, celebrations, field days, family events and more.

Education: You'll learn new things about how and where your food is grown.

Protect Your Children: Children are exposed to four times as many cancer-causing pesticides in their food as adults. Organic food contains no carcinogenic pesticides.

I couldn't agree more! So if you're new to CSAs or just want to see what's available this summer, be sure to stop by the Portsmouth Library tomorrow. And if you're not local to NH or missed the fair, be sure to check out Local Harvest to search for farms and CSA's.

Next is a little freebie I wanted to alert you to. Now I know nothing about this particular magazine, but they are offering a free subscription and it seems right up my "homesteading" alley. Enjoy!

Weekend Review

What a whirlwind weekend! Life has been so utterly crazy lately!

Saturday my mom and I took the kids to the Fall Foliage Fest hosted by the Good Shepherd School in Barrington, NH. The kids had a grand ole time bouncing in the bouncy houses and we enjoyed a few hot dogs and cookies! We didn't stick around for the auction, but it looks like a bunch of great things were available.

After the festival, we took the kids to the Coppal House Farm & Corn Maze in Lee, NH. I will be blogging about this activity this week. So stand by for that post!

I totally missed the Butternut Farm Fall Festival today! Church service was smack dab in the middle of the festival and we didn't get home in time! I hope somebody was able to go and join the fall festivities. I do need to get back to Butternut to pick some more apples!

October 25th and 26th will be the last Applecrest Farm weekend festivals. Lots of free things to do and a bunch of apples to pick. This would made a great "end of fall" activity!

The October Eat Local challenge is still going on for the remainder of October. I am ashamed to tell you how I've been doing. Let's just say that I'm doing the best I can! It's been tough with two young mouths to feed and a limited budget. I will be picking up my 2nd co-op order on Tuesday, though, so I am doing good eating local meats. Be on the lookout for a few new stew/soup recipes in the next week or so.

Also note that you still have time to enter Annie's Homegrown Kiwi magazine offer. And finally, for a bit of Monday fun, head over to Confessions of an Apron Queen and enter her weekly apron giveaway!

Elizabeth's Birthday Week Giveaway

Just wanted to post a quick shout out to a fellow blogger, Elizabeth from Thoughts of an Evil Overlord. She's celebrating her 2 year cancer free (yay!) birthday with a few wonderful giveaways. Alot of the items are hand made or recycled so be sure to stop by and put in your entry for the five great giveaways.

Elizabeth would also like to raise awareness about the ease of becoming a bone marrow donor. Something I don't know much about, but will definitely be looking into.

Good luck winning one of the giveaways!

Apple Harvest Fest

This Saturday, October 4th, is Dover's annual Apple Harvest Fest. I'm totally crossing my fingers for good weather as last weeks Eliot Festival Day was rained out.

Click here for a schedule at Fosters.com.

There will be lots of things to do, see, and taste! There will be a carnival-like center near the NH Children's Museum/Henry Law Park area, a pancake breakfast at 8 am at the Cocheco Falls Courtyard (no way are we making it to that!), lots of entertainment and shopping down Central Ave and of course, tons of apples!

Be sure to head down, it's going to be a nice day and I'm sure it'll be tons of fun.

Also, don't forget that this Friday night from 5:30 - 8:30 pm is the NH Children's Museum's Family Fun Night. Can we say a free kid focused event? See you there!

And more house cleaning, remember it's not too late to sign up for Annie's free magazine offer. My subscription is on it's way! Check this post for more info.

Have a great Wednesday!

Living Green House Party

I've been selected to host a "Living Green House Party"! If you're not familiar, House Party is a website where you can sign up to host different themed parties. Per the website:

A House Party™ is a thousand parties on one day, in homes nationwide, with an exclusive brand experience at the center of the action.
If you're selected to host a party, they supply you with an appropriate party pack to go along with your party and also give you other tools to pull off a smashing party.

So I get to host a living green-themed party which only seems fitting for me and this blog. I've sent out a few invites to a couple of you, but if you're local to me and you're interested in coming, I'd love an e-mail from you. Now I'm just hoping no one creepy contacts me! Haha...well maybe we'll chat on the phone or meet up before the party! I am also planning on shipping out the husband with the toddlers.

Head over to the House Party website and check it out. And I hope to hear back from a few of you! ;)

Free Night at the Children's Museum

As you may know, the Children's Museum has completed it's move to Dover, NH. When they were located in Portsmouth, NH they had a free family fun night on the first Friday of the month. Well, I'm pleased to say that it's coming to the Dover location as well. This event is underwritten by the Citizens Bank Foundation.

October 3rd will be the first Family Fun Night at the Children's Museum of NH from 5:30-8 pm. Come on down, explore the interactive exhibits and make something to take away from the project area. Family Fun Nights will continue till February 2009. This is a great event for children of all ages, there's something for everyone. Let me know if you're going, I know we'll be there.

On a side note, don't forget to take my mini poll on the right hand side of the blog. Thanks!

A little bit of this and that...

Just a little blabbing about what I'm doing and a small recap.

I stopped by Brookford Farm tonight to pick up my raw milk. The raw milk is $4/half gallon with an initial $2.50 bottle deposit. They also have quark (farmer's cheese), yogurt, cream, low fat milk, eggs, lamb, beef, and vegetables. Click here to read up on the benefits of raw milk.

I didn't get to stop by the Dover Farmer's Market today, but my father-in-law brought me some fresh peaches, blackberries and green beans. As well as some ground moose! I'll be at the Barrington Farmer's Market this Saturday for sure.

Speaking of peaches, be sure to head over to Butternut Farm this week and pick some fresh peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, blueberries, and tomatoes! They will have a nice ripe crop for the weekend. I'll be back later to post about freezing peach slices.

I'm also baking my first loaf of Light Oat Bread as I type. The waiting is killing me, I want to see it finished, but I have to wait for the kneading and rising to happen first. I'll update you on how it turns out soon!

Check back this week for a post on my favorite recycling containers.

And lastly, don't forget to purchase one Annie's Homegrown item and then go sign up for your free year subscription to Kiwi magazine. My kids love the Cheddar Bunnies so give those a try!

Have a good Thursday everyone!

**Update**
The Light Oat Bread is delicious! It does have a bumpy top so I'll have to troubleshoot that, but the taste is yummy. I will definitely be making this one again!
