Review: Hefty Basics Tableware & Giveaway

Do you feel like being lazy sometimes?  Now you can with Hefty's new basics paper plates, skip the dishes!  I've given you permission...

I recently received a sample of Hefty's new plates to try out my laziness on.  I love how eco-friendly I can be when using them, plus I'm saving dishwater.  They are compost-able right in your backyard (which I haven't tried yet, but hoping for the best in the summer), plus they contain no inks, dyes or coatings.  The plates are fairly thin, yet sturdy and will definitely withstand a hamburger or steak.  My kids like using these plates because they know they can go in the compost bin.

Hefty® Basics™ has also partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation™ on a quest to plant 10,000 trees, one for every ten new “Like”s on Facebook, so be sure to "Like" them!

Lastly, I have two coupons for free product (value up to $2.99) to giveaway.  I am keeping this simple...all you have to do is post a comment with one tip on how to live more green (make sure I have a way of contacting you).  The giveaway will end Friday, February 15 at midnight EST.  I will use random.org to select a winner and it will be announced on Saturday.  Good luck and happy laziness and composting!

Review: Earth Wonder Herbals Tea and Giveaway

(This giveaway is now closed, be sure to swing by Earth Wonder Herbals Etsy shop to purchase your herbal teas!)

Could there not be a better week to review herbal tea and offer you a chance to try it for yourself?  The rains are leaving and we're now left with a lovely cool, crisp fall weekend.  I recently came across Earth Wonder Herbals of Barrington, NH and had to try some of their teas.  First let's hear Holly's story, founder of Earth Wonder Herbals.  (Be sure to read through to the end for a great giveaway!)
I have always been interested in natural health and alternatives to main stream medicine as well as nutrition. I started studying herbs on my own last year and decided to start an herbal mentorship program at Lichenwood Herbals here in Barrington. I started my classes in March 2010 and my last class is 11/1. I really enjoy helping people make healthy choices. Herbs and natural living is my passion and I am excited to spread my knowledge to others and empower them in their own healing. I will also be co-teaching a class at Sun Moon Stars Herbals in Rollinsford with the store owner, Dawn. The date is TBD but will be in November with the topic being children's herbal remedies. I will keep you posted.
I ordered a few items from her Etsy store and she delivered them to me personally.  She's a very sweet and knowledgeable lady, someone I'd definitely do business with again.

Ok, ok onto the teas I sampled!  The first set of teas that caught my eye was the Children's Herbal Tea Bag Sampler which includes 4 single tea bags each of Tummy Ache tea, Relaxing tea and Children's Sore Throat tea.  I brewed them up per her instructions and the kids happily drank them.  You could mix the teas with juice or honey to sweeten them a bit, but both my kids drank them straight with no complaints (other than wanting a few ice cubes)!  My son even came down with a fever/sore throat on Thursday night and enjoyed taking sips of the Children's Sore Throat tea.  I'd like to try steeping some of the Relaxing tea and putting it in the fridge for the kids to sip on through the day.  A little chamomile through the day couldn't hurt!  The kids definitely give these blends an A+!

For myself, and for the upcoming winter cold and flu season, I picked up the Cold Away Herbal Tea Blend.  A must have for wintertime in New England.  I really liked the blend of echinacea, elderberries, peppermint, rosehips and orange peel.  Plus you get a vitamin C boost from the rosehips and orange peel.  Everything you need to give a stronger kick to that lingering cold.  Try it out, I think you'll like it too!

There are many different tea blends, balms and salves available at Earth Wonder Herbals.  Something for everything.  Now, I want to give you a chance to win 1 oz. of the Afternoon Unwind tea blend!  I'm going to keep this giveaway simple and have you just leave a nice comment at the end of this post.  If you live within approx. 20 min. driving distance of Barrington, NH your tea blend will be hand-delivered by Holly herself otherwise we will ship it to you (US only)!   This giveaway will run through Friday Oct. 8th at midnight.  I will announce the winner on Saturday, October 9th!  So order some teas, enter the giveaway and in the words of Holly, "be well"!

Review: Little Bay Baking Company

You can have your cake and eat it too...especially if you lead a gluten-free lifestyle!

Little Bay Baking Company of Dover, NH is one of the few locally prepared gluten free/casein free baking mix companies. Little Bay Baking Company was started with one simple idea - to produce a gluten free/casein free line of products that provide celiacs and others with a gluten or wheat intolerance with foods that "taste like you remember".

My family is not dedicated to gluten free, but I definitely like feeding my family gluten-free meals and treats every once and awhile as I think we get enough gluten in our diet already. What better way to entice them than with Little Bay Baking Companies amazing mixes!

I was excited to try the Cookie Bar Mix and Yellow Cake Mix. There are fantastic recipes on their website that show you a few different ways of using the different mixes. I chose to bake the Apple and Spice Bars with the Cookie Bar Mix. It was such a simple recipe to put together and the end result was so delicious. The entire family couldn't get enough of this sweet treat! Definitely two thumbs up!

Next up I morphed the Yellow Cake Mix into a scrumptious Chocolate Cake.  To keep the recipe casein free, I used coconut oil as my oil of choice.  This added a nice mellow coconut flavor which we all loved.  We left it un-frosted, but you could definitely do it up right for a birthday party or what have you!  Another two thumbs up!

The other mixes available include: Pumpkin Bread Mix, Waffle & Donut Hole Mix, Gingerbread Cookie Mix, Corn Bread Mix, and an All Purpose Breakfast Mix.  What's not to love?

You can find Little Bay Baking Company in many of the New England Whole Food's markets, as well as in other health and specialty shops around NH.  You can order online where there is free shipping on orders over $30.  Lastly, Portsmouth Tea Company in Somersworth, NH Is carrying pre-made goodies using the Little Bay Baking Co. mixes.  Stop by for a lovely cup of tea and a gluten-free goodie!

Enjoy!

Review: Amelia Maes & Co.

I love living in Southern NH!  There are so many chances to eat locally all year round and an endless supply of specialty food producers.  One of those awesome food producers is Dagne Goodwin of Amelia Maes & Co.

I received a sample of Amelia Maes & Co.'s Goodie's Barbecue Sauce and tried it late last week.  Let me say, very good stuff!  I basted the sauce on to some chicken pieces and we gobbled it up!

Goodie's Barbecue Sauce is a Kansas City style sauce, smokey, sweet and peppery.  Not too hot, not too sweet.  My three-year old enjoyed it whereas my picky four year old was not too keen.  It definitely has a bit of a bite, but not too much that most kids won't go for it.  Here's a cooking tip from their website:
We recommend that you put the sauce on right when the meat is done and then put it back on the grill for a few minutes to cook it into the meat.  This is how the masters do it and you won't have a burnt piece of meat on your hands.  You have to try it.

I baked my chicken and put the barbecue sauce on after it was cooked, and, well, you have to try it!  Also what I love is that no additives, fillers, colorings, or preservatives are used in the making of the barbecue sauce.

Also made by Amelia Maes & Co. are a selection of gourmet hot pepper jellies, savory jams, sweet jams, and dessert toppings.

You can find Amelia Maes & Co. products in these locations:

Movie Review: The Cove

My husband and I sat down to watch The Cove this evening not knowing quite what to expect aside from the fact that it beat out Food, Inc. in winning Best Documentary at the Oscars last week.

I was so moved by the film that I was compelled to come to you and blog about it.  The movie itself is about uncovering one of Japan's most hidden dolphin secrets.  In this cove in Taiji, Japan, 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered from September till March.  Ric O'Barry, the original dolphin trainer on the TV series Flipper became a dolphin activist after his experience on the show and living with the dolphins.  Years after Flipper, his activism has brought him to the pinnacle of his career, the cove in Japan where so many dolphins are senselessly murdered each year.  It is his mission to bring this documentary to the world and for the killings to cease.  It was quite amazing to watch the secret mission unfold, and realize how desperately Japanese officials and fishermen wanted to keep this cove a secret.

What my husband and I found most intriguing was in the special features.  It was an 18-minute documentary about the effect of mercury poisoning called The Cove: Mercury Rising.  It goes into a study done in Japan regarding the mercury levels in tuna and also the thimerosal in modern day vaccinations.

This struck a chord in me as I have two young children and I watch so closely what they put into their bodies.  While I'm not here to argue vaccinations, I did see a correlation between my sons blossoming speech, followed by the MMR vaccination and his subsequent vocal silence.  Now at almost 4 years of age, we are only getting three word phrases and enough physical antics to understand what he's saying for the most part.  While I do not think vaccinations are necessarily "bad," I do think we the public need to be made fully aware about the potential dangers (even though the courts have ruled that thimerosal does not cause autism) and we need to space vaccinations differently. When you watch, The Cove, be sure to also watch this in the special features.

My heart just breaks for this generation, the sickest generation as of yet.  What can we do, how can we change things?  This generation does not need to be ingesting the amounts of soy, HFCS, partially-hydrogenated, ultra-high pasteurized junk they get fed these days.  It is so sad that it has come to this, greed, deception, and lies and as I say nowadays...just follow the money trail.  I do what I can for my family, but I won't lie and say it's easy to gather ingredients and prepare these nourishing meals for my family, to get them to eat food that's not sugary cereal or McDonald's.  It's exhausting at times the more my eyes are opened, I just need to keep my head set on healing my family with real food.  (And I really am truly thankful for the bounty of real nourishing food available year-round in NH!)

I suppose at this point I am just rambling so let me share my top five favorite documentaries in no particular order that have encouraged me in why I do what I do when it comes to our food and lifestyle choices:
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtfully committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. ~Margaret Mead

Review: The Soup Guy

The Soup Guy is just that, a guy selling soup!  But what's great about The Soup Guy is that, as much as possible, The Soup Guy soups are made using locally grown organic and all natural ingredients!

Curtis Gould, owner of The Soup Guy, grew up watching PBS cooking shows and cooking in the kitchen with his mom.  Cooking became his creative outlet and in his youth, he found it was a valuable and useful skill set.  It was then that his life took an unconventional turn and he moved to India to live in an Ashram ended up in the kitchen making vegetarian meals for upwards of 80 people.  His specialty quickly became soup!  After returning home, he continued to cook and make soups on the weekend.  He has since turned his soup passion into a business featuring all natural ingredients.

I was able to get a taste of his new soup flavor, NH Bison, Black Bean & Vegetable Chili.  It's a very delicious chili with a sweet yet spicy (mild to medium spice) meld of spices.  The black beans played in nicely to smooth out the texture and flavor.  The bison wasn't gamey tasting at all which I was pleasantly surprised by and you can't beat free-range meats!

He also sells Twisted Emerald Isle P’tattie n Leek Soup which is usually the first to sell out and also a Malaysian Carrot, Sweet Potato & Roasted Spice Soup.

You can find Curtis, The Soup Guy, at the upcoming Seacoast Eat Local Winter Farmers' Markets, the next two Rye Winter Farmers' Markets, as well as at the New England Marketplace at One Washington Center in Dover on April 24th.  While at the Seacoast Eat Local Winter Farmers' Markets, be sure to try their soup in a gluten free bread bowl featuring bread from Abigail's Bakery.

His soups are also for sale at these two retail locations:

“Come back to soup…the original comfort food.”

Just Be...

As I've mentioned before I committed to do almost 100% of my Christmas shopping through local NH vendors, farmers, and craftsmen.

I wasn't holding out much hope for local-ness while visiting the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester, but I was pleasantly surprised! I spotted a kiosk feature these great "Just Be" t-shirts, sweaters and kids apparel and was happy to find out that this was a NH based business.  (Make sure you get to the bottom of this post for the sweet deal I have for you!)

Michelle Pratt-Lienhart started Just Be Products LLC after a t-shirt making project at a local art college where she was teaching.  Here's her take on Just Be:
Just Be is a state of mind, a way of life, and a philosophy. It is a line of apparel and accessories not meant to inspire…but to Just Be. Just Be gear allows people to show the world how they like to Just Be.

Now I have been camping for my entire life (in tents, the only way to camp!) and was ecstatic when I saw the line of "Just Be A Camper" t-shirts and sweatshirts.  I knew it'd make a perfect Christmas gift for my dad.

I also picked up a Just Be A Hiker t-shirt for my brother-in-law who has been hiking the NH/ME mountains all year long.

There is also a line of Just Be products in organic cotton.  Check out this Just Be Green t-shirt (love the frog!):

There's also a great selection for the kiddos:

So here's the deal for you...right now at the kiosk (in the "D" section) at the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester you can get $5 off any 2 tees and the sweatshirts are 20% off!  You can also order online and receive 20% off your order with this special code: 20%OFF .  I hope you'll join me in patronizing the local NH business and help keep your money in the local economy.  Just be!

You can also find Just Be on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The review here within is my own honest opinion of the product.  I was not paid to write this review and received no compensation for writing it.

Gluten-Free Goes Local

There's now a gluten-free option at a few seacoast farmers' markets! I'd like to introduce you to founder Steven Scaturro and his two endeavors, Buzz Bomb World Spice Blends (at the markets) and Buzz's Bakery and Take-Out Cafe located in N. Hampton, NH.

You can find the Buzz Bomb booth at these farmers' markets:

  • Durham
  • Exeter
  • Rye
  • Hampton
  • Portsmouth
At the markets there will be a selection of 100% gluten free baked goods (and a few items are gluten free and dairy free) and a wide selection of spice blends from mild to spice-y. From what I hear, the gluten-free brownies and whoopie pies go very fast, so get there early to get these sweet treats! Whether you eat gluten-free or not, I hear you'll want to try these! (I've yet to get my hands on some myself, they've been sold out!) Or you may just have to stop by their bakery....

Buzz's Bakery and Take-Out Cafe is the other way to get this gluten-free goodness! Buzz's Bakery is located at 77 Lafayette Road in N. Hampton, NH. I stopped by the bakery today and had a wonderful talk with Steven and picked up a few cookies for my kiddos. These items are also featured at the store:
  • Baked Goods
  • Coffee/Tea
  • Prepared Foods
  • Gluten-Free Pizza Crust
  • Gluten-Free Breads, Pastries and More!
Buzz's Bakery and Take-Out Cafe can also be reached by phone at 603-379-6512.

Happy Pig = Happy Meal

What a fabulous video I came across tonight from ABC's Nightline. Did you know that Chipotle chicken and pork comes from "happy" chickens and pigs? Chipotle's motto is "Food with Integrity" (gotta love that)!

Did you know that Chipotle buys some of its meat from Polyface Farms? How cool is that?! If "Polyface Farm" doesn't ring a bell, PLEASE find a copy of The Omnivore's Dilemmaby Michael Pollan and read it as soon as possible. This is the book that got me started on my "living local" journey.

Must watch video clip from ABC:
Chipotle's Fast Food Facelift

"In our culture today, our Western, reductionist, Greco-Roman, linear, fragmented, disconnected, systematized, all parts orientated culture, we don't ask how to make a pig happy, we ask how do we grow them faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper. And that's not a noble goal." --Joel Salatin, Polyface Farms
I truly believe that buying food from farmers who embrace "happy animals" is the way to go. There's no need to confine these animals unless the end goal is to grow them "faster, fatter, bigger, cheaper" as Joel said. Pay for the better quality food. You're not just paying for a tasty meal, but for a bit of these farmer's livelihoods. Vote with your dollars who you want to support and which values you believe in.

It's so great to see a "fast food" restaurant step up and use meat from non-industrial sources. Oh and did I mention that Chipotle has no rBGH in their dariy products? Chipotle has a new (vocal) supporter (not that I ever didn't like their food before)!! The only Chipotle in NH is located in Newington, NH, so hopefully you're close so you can enjoy their tasty food! For other Chipotle's across the USA, click here.

Another great local "fast" food restaurant is Fresh Local on Beane Lane in Newington, NH. They use local produce and meat and I'm excited to try them out as well. They are also part of the Green Alliance.

More restaurants that serve local food:
  • Anneka Jans, Kittery, ME
  • Black Trumpet Bistro, Portsmouth, NH
  • Blue Moon Market Cafe, Exeter, NH
  • The Dunaway, Portsmouth, NH
  • Ferguson-Davis Dining Room at Flag Hill Winery, Lee, NH
  • Flatbread Company, Portsmouth, NH
  • Four, Portsmouth, NH
  • Joshua's, Wells, ME
  • Las Olas, Exeter, NH
  • Pepperland Cafe, S Berwick, ME
  • Portsmouth Brewery, Portsmouth, NH
  • Ristorante Massimo, Portsmouth, NH
  • Robert's Maine Grill, Kittery, ME
  • Victory 96, Portsmouth, NH
  • Zampa, Epping, NH
As a last side note, I have also read one of Joel Salatin's books, Holy Cows And Hog Heaven: The Food Buyer's Guide To Farm Friendly Food, and I highly recommend it in addition to Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma. These are two must read books. Do yourself a favor and go find a copy, you'll be glad you did!

These are a few of my favorite things...

I wanted to share 10 of my favorite things. These are things that keep me going day to day and help me live local!1. Roadside farm stands. So great for random fresh produce without needing to visit a farmers' market. I love that feeling of "discovering" a new stand as I drive along. I have a few favorites as well. There's a small farm stand on Gear Rd. off Rt. 125 in Rochester, NH that has a fun selection of fresh veggies and fruit. I've stocked up on rhubarb and asparagus in the past month!

Elf's Garden Center on Walnut St. will have local produce and they carry local meat, milk, eggs and more. More road side farm stand locations can be found here.

2. Paperback Swap. This is an economical way of "swapping" your used unwanted books for other books you want. I've received over 75 books, some which are amazing out of print cookbooks. I'd love for you to use me as a referral and if you list 10 books, you get a free credit to pick out your first book.

PaperBackSwap.com - Book Club to Swap, Trade & Exchange Books for Free.

3. Peppermint Pick Me Up Soap from Jenness Farm. I'm just in love with this stuff. It's such a refreshing smell with a bit of exfoliating scrubbies. Jenness Farm has an amazing store filled with tons of goat milk products, from shampoo to bath soap to bug spray! Their products are available to purchase from their online store, at their store in Nottingham, or at the Portsmouth Farmers' Market.

4. Cookbooks! Here are some of my current favorites:
5. Bloggy friends!6. Ariston Olive Oil Refill & Save program. Available at Calef's Country Store in Barrington, NH. $11.99 for the initial purchase and $8.99 for refills. I figure if I can't buy local olive oil then I can at least buy my olive oil locally!

7. Shaklee Vitalizer, Mighty Smarts, Incredivites and the Get Clean home products. For over 50 years, generations of families have counted on Shaklee to do what no other company can do quite the same—make products that are naturally safe AND proven effective. The vitamins are wonderful and the cleaning products can't be beat!

8. Hiking and taking walks in the area. We love Blue Job Mountain and Mt. Isinglass Recreational Area. The Mt. Isinglass Recreational Area is located on Rochester Neck Rd in Gonic and offers two looped trails with waterfall views and picnic areas. With the kids approaching ages 4 and 3, we're definitely looking forward to more outdoor time!

9. Yard sales. Great source of used book, kitchenware and other "junk" (as my husband would say)! Here's where I check for upcoming yard sales:
10. And my last favorite thing has to be YOU, my readers! You guys keep me going, learning and exploring the Seacoast to bring you the very best local recipes, events and sustainable living resources! So thank you for reading and visiting this blog and I hope you'll stick around! Any feedback is greatly appreciated (as are comments)!!

I love my Crocs!

I received my first pair of Crocs a few days ago, and I must say, I'm in love! I bought a pair of army green Mary Jane Crocs. They are SO comfortable I'm wearing them around the house during the day like slippers. Anybody else in love with their Crocs?

They're quick to put on so they'll be great for running around with kids this summer. Also they're anti-microbial and odor resistant, which we all know is a good thing. Ha ha! Did I mention they are comfortable?

I found a good deal on them at shoes.com during their Saturday Sale. While this sale is not currently going on, bookmark these deal-hunting blogs for updates on future sales. (They're not all mom-only related).

Baby Cheapskate
Freebies4Mom
MomsByHeart

The best part about Crocs (which I just learned), is that that they are recyclable. Their SolesUnited(sm) program takes in donated used Crocs and produces new Crocs from the used material and distributes them to people in need overseas. What a great way to ensure your footwear doesn't end up in a landfill any time soon.

To date they have donated over 1 million pairs of shoes and in 2008 their goal was to donate 2 million pairs of recycled shoes to those in need.

So go try on a pair and I'm sure you'll be hooked!

It's a smash hit!

I have a special new product to tell you about. I was given a few samples for my kids to try from a company called Smashies. Smashies are 3.2 oz packets of drinkable applesauce. Get it? NO mess! I never thought I'd see mess-less applesauce!

Here are some great things about Smashies applesauce:

  • Certified Organic
  • No high fructose corn syrup
  • No mess
  • No added sugar
  • Portable and convenient
  • One serving of fruit per packet
  • Local company (Boston, MA)
My kids loved these and they figured out how to drink it real quick. I don't think they're available in our stores yet (Market Basket, Hannaford or Shaw's), but I plan on requesting the product in my local Hannaford. I just love all the features of the applesauce, especially the no mess part!

Here are a few pics of my kids enjoying their applesauce!

Thanks Smashies for a great product and I hope we see this in the store soon. (Hey, if you don't want to wait, you can buy it online...)
