Locavore Gift Idea #12

Today is for the kiddos!  Do you have last minute gifts or stocking stuffer you need for your little ones or some little child you know?  The place to be is the Noggin Factory toy shop in downtown Dover.  They have stocked the best kids toys you can find from such lines as Lego, Melissa & Doug, Groovy Girls, Erector, Playmobil, Webkinz, Bruder, K'Nex, Calico Critters, Corrolle, and many others.  They are located at 53 Washington St. down by the mills in Dover.  My kids have enjoyed visiting their store to buy a small toy with their tooth fairy and birthday money.  You're sure to find a good, solid toy that will both entertain and even educate!

You can even pick up your copy of Skunk Zoo by local authors, Eowyn and Christopher Ouellette!

Their hours this week are as follows:
Tuesday 9-6
Wednesday 9-7
Thursday 9-8
Christmas Eve 9-3

Follow them on Facebook or Twitter.

While we're on the subject of kids gifts, I'll throw in a bonus idea.  Right across the street from the Noggin Factory is The Children's Museum of New Hampshire.  Day passes make great stocking stuffers and a yearly membership will make a gift to remember!  Follow them on Twitter or Facebook as well.

What awesome local gifts have you found this year?

Community Supported Seeds

High Mowing Organic Seeds of Vermont has rolled out their Community Supported Seed (CSS) program.  With the CSS you can purchase "seed credits" to be redeemed during the upcoming gardening season.  Right now you can purchase seed vouchers for 10% off through the end of the year.  So a $100 voucher will cost you $90 now and can be used next year.  There are various denominations listed on the website or you can call and request any denomination you'd like.

Maybe you've already received some Christmas money, this would be a great place to make the most of your summer 2011 seed money.  The CSS will make a great gift for a gardener or farmer as well.  Do realize the actual voucher with instructions won't be mailed till sometime in January.  Don't let this stop you though, I'm sure you could come up with a nice gardener themed gift basket and slip a note in saying they have an organic seed
voucher coming as well.

From High Mowing Organic Seeds:
By joining our CSS, you put your seed dollars towards supporting a family-owned company committed to meeting your farming needs with high-quality organic seeds.
High Mowing Organic Seeds also offers up some other gift ideas

Locavore Gift Idea #11

Today is one BIG reminder to get our Saturday morning and head over to Wentworth Greenhouse for Seacoast Eat Local's "before Christmas" amazing farmers' market.  There are over 55 vendors signed up making this the largest winter farmers' market to date.

One of the features of the market I wanted to highlight is the Seacoast Eat Local table of goods.  Seacoast Eat Local sells products from northern New England not otherwise available at the farmers’ market to help support the organization of the markets.  These things include from organic apple cider vinegar, sunflower oil, gift certificates, and our new tote bags will be available at the Seacoast Eat Local market booth. Sewall’s Organic Apple Cider Vinegar is unpasteurized and comes in two sizes. Henry’s Organic Sunflower Oil also comes in two sizes and is from Maine.  They also offer gift certificates in $5 increments, a terrific gift for coworkers, kid’s teaches, neighbors—everyone appreciates great food!  Fill up their new tote bag with some local treats for an amazing gift.

There are so many exciting things that I am simply going to send you over to the Seacoast Eat Local blog so you can read through the upcoming farmers' market posts.  Read up on the discounted meats, $4# select lobsters, Christmas greens and trees, artisan gifts, special parking places, and of course, baked goods!  I hope you'll take a moment to swing through the farmers' market, especially if you've never visited a winter market before.  Buy local this Christmas season.

Oh and don't forget about Nick's heritage breed turkeys available at this market.  After the market, be sure to finish up your Christmas shopping at Lucy's Art Emporium down the road.

Locavore Gift Idea #10

Since we're getting down to the wire for shipping, I wanted to offer up another suggestion for those far away, maybe hard to buy for individuals.  Keep Local Farms is a wonderful organization doing great work in the New England area.
Keep Local Farms is an education and contribution program that connects consumers with local dairy farmers and encourages the purchase of local foods. It is a way to educate consumers about the value of local dairy farms, raise funds to support dairy farms throughout New England, and drive dairy sales.
This Christmas season you can give a gift in honor of or in memory of someone special to you. By supporting Keep Local Farms you give them the gift of open spaces and access to local dairy products. When you make a contribution in honor of someone else, you will receive a certificate via email that can be easily printed and tucked into a holiday card.

Click here to see the 2010 Keep Local Farm year in review video to see all the wonderful things this organization is doing.

Pledge your support to keep local farms and honor or remember someone special in your life with this thoughtful gift!  This makes a great stocking stuffer as well.  Every dollar counts!

Locavore Gift Idea #9

Well today's idea is actually a store with LOTS of choices.  Lucy's Art Emporium is a fantastic shop located in Dover, NH with a myriad of Christmas gifts to choose from (plus I'm partial to the name Lucy).  Lucy's Art Emporium is your place for fine art, retro home accessories, hand-crafted jewelry, artist greeting cards, and holiday gifts. A lot of their gifts are made by local artisans as well.  You can visit them on 303 Central Ave in Dover either Monday-Friday 11 am to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm or Sunday 11am to 4 pm.

You can also visit their Etsy store here: Lucy's Art Emporium Etsy Store for convenient online ordering or if you have a long distance gift to ship.  Here are some of my favorites from their online store:

As you can see there surely is something for everyone.  I also heard they just got in over 40 new Scrabble tile pendants and at $8 they make a great frugal unique gift!  You can follow Lucy's Art Emporium on Twitter and on Facebook.  Happy Christmas shopping!

Locavore Gift Idea #8

Sneaking in another gift tonight and in a minute I'll tell you why. This gift is a book written by a local author, Lindsey Carmichael. She has written the book, Greening Your Family which offers an overview of three areas; cleaning products, foods, and personal care products.
Greening Your Family is a valuable reference guide for parents to make informed decisions about the consumable products we buy on a regular basis. Information is arranged in an easy-to-use format that allows readers to quickly find what they need. The book includes numerous tables and product lists, recipes for making homemade cleaners, and a variety of web-based resources. Perfect to bring to the store and consult while shopping, Greening Your Family offers busy families an important tool they can use for optimal health.
The book also raises awareness about the legislative landscape, where there is currently little governmental oversight around dangerous chemicals used in food, personal care, and cleaning products. Author Lindsey Carmichael explains how scary, shocking and outrageous this is, promotes advocacy on a grass roots level, and outlines how we can take action to make our families safer.
Why I bring up this now is because you can purchase a Green Alliance membership AND Lindsey Carmichael's book together for just $40 (you do need to pick up this gift at the Green Alliance headquarters in Kittery, ME).  What better way then to commit to a greener and healthier 2011, for yourself or a loved one?

Also, if you have a green techie in your life, Lindsey has released an iPhone app giftable through iTunes for just $2.99.  Check out some of the applications features:
  • Extensive information covering three broad categories: food, personal care and cleaning products
  • Recommendations for safe brands of products in each category
  • Information about ingredients to avoid in conventional products
  • Detailed information about labels on food, cleaning and personal care products
  • Ability to create a ‘favorites’ list for quick access at the store Easy social network integration for Facebook and Twitter
  • Updates ensuring current information about the ever changing green products landscape
  • Safe Guide to Plastics for foods
  • Guide to House Plants That Purify the Air in your home
  • Table of the top 15 ingredients to avoid in personal care products
So pick up your copy of Greening Your Family book or iTunes app this week and make someone's Christmas a lil' greener.

Locavore Gift Idea #6

Today I bring you Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol to introduce today's locavore gift idea:

"It's Christmas Day!" said Scrooge to himself. "I haven't missed it. The Spirits have done it all in one night. They can do anything they like. Of course they can. Of course they can. Hallo, my fine fellow!"
"Hallo!" returned the boy.
"Do you know the Poulterer's, in the next street but one, at the corner?" Scrooge inquired.
"I should hope I did," replied the lad.
"An intelligent boy!" said Scrooge. "A remarkable boy! Do you know whether they've sold the prize Turkey that was hanging up there -- Not the little prize Turkey: the big one?"
"What, the one as big as me?" returned the boy.
"What a delightful boy!" said Scrooge. "It's a pleasure to talk to him. Yes, my buck."
"It's hanging there now," replied the boy.
"Is it?" said Scrooge. "Go and buy it."
"Walk-er!" exclaimed the boy.
"No, no," said Scrooge, "I am in earnest. Go and buy it, and tell them to bring it here, that I may give them the direction where to take it. Come back with the man, and I'll give you a shilling. Come back with him in less than five minutes and I'll give you half-a-crown."
The boy was off like a shot. He must have had a steady hand at a trigger who could have got a shot off half so fast.
"I'll send it to Bob Cratchit's!" whispered Scrooge, rubbing his hands, and splitting with a laugh. "He shan't know who sends it. It's twice the size of Tiny Tim."
A Christmas turkey!  I happen to know a fine upstanding young man raising his own heritage breed turkeys.  Nick Locke of Nick's Chicks is a 14 yr old boy who's passion is raising poultry.  These turkeys have been raised with lots of love and good care.  You will be able to purchase your very own Christmas turkey next Saturday, Decemeber 18th at the Wentworth Greenhouse Winter Farmers' Market from 10 am - 2 pm.  What a stunning and delicious gift it will make.

So don't be a Scrooge, pick up a beautiful heritage breed turkey from Chicken Nick and support a young man and his farming endeavors.  It'll be some of the best turkey meat you've ever tasted!  You can find Nick and his turkey's at Sugarmomma's Maple Farm table and he can also be reached in the evenings at
603-942-7005.

Locavore Gift Idea #5

Today's gift is not food!  Today I want to share with you two of the newest authors on Seacoast.  Meeet Eowyn and Christopher of Dancing Skunk Media and their new book, Skunk Zoo.  From the author, Christopher
Skunk Zoo is a fun book told in rhyme with bright cut paper illustrations and cut paper text. It is a family's trip to the imaginary Skunk Zoo where they see amazing skunks that not only look cute (and smell) but play instruments, dance ballet and more. We live in a wonderful part of rural New Hampshire. Last year, when Eowyn was 3, we went for a walk. Eowyn was next to me and her little sister was in her Mei Tai on my back. I told Eowyn that we should go to a zoo some day to see the animals. Eowyn said "I want to go to the Skunk Zoo". Starting with "What's that", and being shamed by the answer, "A zoo with skunks", I asked her questions all the way home.
While her sister napped and Eowyn enjoyed her daily quiet time, I wrote up the first draft of this book, based on the answers to all my questions. Later, I read it to her and fixed the parts where she saw literary weakness. As the book continued to develop, Eowyn continued to explain how it could be better. "No Daddy, it's not supposed to be a rock band". "It's been a rock band for months now, and the pictures are almost done". "Daddy, it's supposed to be a Skunk Ballerina." "Could I just add a Skunk Ballerina?" Every one of her creative improvements was incorporated, and all art was approved by her.
I definitely know a little girl in my house who will be getting a copy for Christmas.  What child in your family would love a copy of this unique book written by a pair of local authors?

You can buy your copy of Skunk Zoo on Amazon here: Skunk Zoo.  You also have the opportunity to purchase the book and have it autographed by both authors this Friday at the Calef's Store in Barrington, NH at their annual Holiday Soiree.  The Soiree is taking place from 5 pm - 8 pm, you can buy your autographed copy of Skunk Zoo as well as enjoy wine tastings with local wineries, appetizers and school choir caroling.  I'm sure you could fine some more local gifts at Calef's so you can check off even more of that shopping list!

You can also find Dancing Skunk Media on Facebook.

Locavore Gift Idea #4

Today I bring you something to...cut and serve...food!  The Original Woodchuck has been in business for over 50 years specializing in bread boards, cheese boards, cooling racks, butcher blocks, and trivets.  I happen to know I have a custom made board coming my way for Christmas.  I haven't seen it yet, but I heard it's gorgeous.  This is a gift that will become an heirloom piece for future generations.

You can find The Original Woodchuck at the Newmarket Winter Farmers' Market on Dec. 19.  If you want something custom made, be sure to contact them through their website, they can probably still deliver custom boards before Christmas.  The boards are super smooth, quality works of art.  You can also have either words or an image laser engraved to further your customization.

I can almost guarantee this gift would be warmly welcomed!

Locavore Gift Idea #3

Um...food again.  Is that ok?  I don't hear anyone complaining!  Today I'm going to highlight Amelia Maes & Co.  Dagne Goodwin, owner of Amelia Maes & Co., makes some fantastic jams and jellies and let's not forget the barbecue sauce!

For jams you have your choice of Very Berry Jam, Crimson Jam, Spiced Blueberry Jam, Pear Apple Jam or Cranberry Horseradish Jam.  There's also the more spicy selection; Raspberry Thai Jam, Golden Hot Pepper, Emerald Hot Pepper Jelly and Pineapple Habenera Hot Pepper Jelly.  If desserts are what you're after, why not try the Apple Maple Dribble, Blueberry Pie Dribble, or the Raspberry Dribble.

Dagne's husband came up with the master recipe for their equally tasty Goodies Barbecue Sauce. It's a Kansas City style sauce with all natural, no additives, perservatives or colorings.  It's really really good!

You can find Amelia Maes & Co. products at Philbrick's Fresh Market in Portsmouth, Harvest Markets in Hollis, Bedford and Marlborough, Chalifour's in Manchester, Concord Coop in Concord and Butlers Pantry in Dover.  You can also contact Dagne directly through her blog and arrange pickup that way as well.

Also, don't forget to check out Christmas in Strafford  this Saturday and Sunday from 9 am - 4 pm.  You can stop by Dagne's place on Saturday only, she's stop #14.  Be sure to stop by the website to get a map of this unique craft fair!

What about a homemade gift basket of coffee, maple syrup AND a jam or jelly?  Now you're talking!  I will be back on Monday with Locavore Gift #4.  See you then!

Locavore Gift Idea #2

Let's stay with the food ideas, since you can never go wrong with food!  How about some local maple syrup?  My favorite is Grade B by Sugarmomma's Maple Farm.  Ok, ok, the Sugarmomma does offer other splendid maple treats.  How about homemade maple candies, maple peanuts, walnuts, cashews and popcorn, maple cotton candy, maple hot sauce.  There's also the homemade non-maple sweets; white trash (nuts, cereals and pretzels wrapped in white chocolate) or the new chocolate (good chocolate!) dipped Oreos.  I gave some of the maple hot sauce as a gift one year and it was very well received!  She can put together amazing custom gift boxes or baskets as well.

You can catch this popular lady (or maybe Sugardaddy!) at the upcoming Exeter Farmers' Market this Saturday, Dec 4 as well as at the Somersworth PTA Craft Fair.  The following Saturday (Dec 11) you can catch them at the Northwood PTA Craft Fair and the following week (Dec 18) you'll spot them at the Rollinsford Farmers' Market at the Wentworth Greenhouses.

If none of those Saturdays are convenient for you, feel free to give the Sugarmomma a call (contact info in her website header) and you can make arrangements to pick up at the sugar house in Northwood.

This is sure to be a welcomed gift!

Keep up with Sugarmomma's Maple Farm on Facebook as well.

(Can I pop in my cutie eating Sugarmomma's maple soft serve this summer?  Behind Lucy you can see a small sample of the delicious maple products available.)

Locavore Gift Idea #1

Since it's December 1st I figured it's time to get thinking about gift ideas for the upcoming Christmas season.  So throughout the month I will be featuring different ideas for stellar local gifts your friends and family will love to receive.

Up first is is fresh roasted coffee from Red Rover Coffee Roasting.  Who doesn't love the smell of coffee brewing.  I have sampled this coffee a few times and truly delicious.

There a few different options for this gift.  If you're looking for a show stopper, why not sign up the recipient for Rover @ Home.  You can choose from a 3 month or 6 month programs, once or twice a month and starting at a low $31 it's a no-brainer.  There are other perks for this program so check it out!

The second option is to either just buy a pound of coffee (make sure to buy it close to the gifting time for optimal flavor and freshness) or try out one of their gift packs that comes complete with a handy stainless steel coffee scoop (that doubles as a bag clip!).  You can either have this gift delivered or you can save 10% and pickup at one of the upcoming Newmarket, Exeter or Rollinsford farmers' market.  How convenient!

If you can't decide, opt for their Red Rover Gift eCoupon which will let the bearer choose what they like best!  These are great for last minute gifts because the eCoupon is e-mailed to you and then you can forward this to the recipient to be redeemed online.

If you do choose this awesome gift, I would love it if you let them know that Virginia of Living the Local Life sent you.  The opinion herein is my own and I was not paid or compensated for this post.  Red Rover Coffee has a referral program where I have a chance to earn free coffee.  So I appreciate you letting them know I sent you! And yes, the coffee is amazing.  If you've never had freshly roasted coffee, you're missing out!

**Oh don't forget that the coffee grounds can go into you compost bin as well!  If you vermicompost, I know the worms love the grounds!
