Review: Hefty Basics Tableware & Giveaway

Do you feel like being lazy sometimes?  Now you can with Hefty's new basics paper plates, skip the dishes!  I've given you permission...

I recently received a sample of Hefty's new plates to try out my laziness on.  I love how eco-friendly I can be when using them, plus I'm saving dishwater.  They are compost-able right in your backyard (which I haven't tried yet, but hoping for the best in the summer), plus they contain no inks, dyes or coatings.  The plates are fairly thin, yet sturdy and will definitely withstand a hamburger or steak.  My kids like using these plates because they know they can go in the compost bin.

Hefty® Basics™ has also partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation™ on a quest to plant 10,000 trees, one for every ten new “Like”s on Facebook, so be sure to "Like" them!

Lastly, I have two coupons for free product (value up to $2.99) to giveaway.  I am keeping this simple...all you have to do is post a comment with one tip on how to live more green (make sure I have a way of contacting you).  The giveaway will end Friday, February 15 at midnight EST.  I will use random.org to select a winner and it will be announced on Saturday.  Good luck and happy laziness and composting!

Review: Earth Wonder Herbals Tea and Giveaway

(This giveaway is now closed, be sure to swing by Earth Wonder Herbals Etsy shop to purchase your herbal teas!)

Could there not be a better week to review herbal tea and offer you a chance to try it for yourself?  The rains are leaving and we're now left with a lovely cool, crisp fall weekend.  I recently came across Earth Wonder Herbals of Barrington, NH and had to try some of their teas.  First let's hear Holly's story, founder of Earth Wonder Herbals.  (Be sure to read through to the end for a great giveaway!)
I have always been interested in natural health and alternatives to main stream medicine as well as nutrition. I started studying herbs on my own last year and decided to start an herbal mentorship program at Lichenwood Herbals here in Barrington. I started my classes in March 2010 and my last class is 11/1. I really enjoy helping people make healthy choices. Herbs and natural living is my passion and I am excited to spread my knowledge to others and empower them in their own healing. I will also be co-teaching a class at Sun Moon Stars Herbals in Rollinsford with the store owner, Dawn. The date is TBD but will be in November with the topic being children's herbal remedies. I will keep you posted.
I ordered a few items from her Etsy store and she delivered them to me personally.  She's a very sweet and knowledgeable lady, someone I'd definitely do business with again.

Ok, ok onto the teas I sampled!  The first set of teas that caught my eye was the Children's Herbal Tea Bag Sampler which includes 4 single tea bags each of Tummy Ache tea, Relaxing tea and Children's Sore Throat tea.  I brewed them up per her instructions and the kids happily drank them.  You could mix the teas with juice or honey to sweeten them a bit, but both my kids drank them straight with no complaints (other than wanting a few ice cubes)!  My son even came down with a fever/sore throat on Thursday night and enjoyed taking sips of the Children's Sore Throat tea.  I'd like to try steeping some of the Relaxing tea and putting it in the fridge for the kids to sip on through the day.  A little chamomile through the day couldn't hurt!  The kids definitely give these blends an A+!

For myself, and for the upcoming winter cold and flu season, I picked up the Cold Away Herbal Tea Blend.  A must have for wintertime in New England.  I really liked the blend of echinacea, elderberries, peppermint, rosehips and orange peel.  Plus you get a vitamin C boost from the rosehips and orange peel.  Everything you need to give a stronger kick to that lingering cold.  Try it out, I think you'll like it too!

There are many different tea blends, balms and salves available at Earth Wonder Herbals.  Something for everything.  Now, I want to give you a chance to win 1 oz. of the Afternoon Unwind tea blend!  I'm going to keep this giveaway simple and have you just leave a nice comment at the end of this post.  If you live within approx. 20 min. driving distance of Barrington, NH your tea blend will be hand-delivered by Holly herself otherwise we will ship it to you (US only)!   This giveaway will run through Friday Oct. 8th at midnight.  I will announce the winner on Saturday, October 9th!  So order some teas, enter the giveaway and in the words of Holly, "be well"!

If you are pregnant, nursing, have auto immune diseases, or other serious health challenges, please contact your doctor before using these tea blends. Giveaways at Simple Butta

Heather, another local NH blogger, at Simple Butta has two fantastic Earth Day themed giveaways going on right now.

The first giveaway is for Terracycle's Kids Vegetable Growing KitsTerracycle offers an array of amazing upcycled products.  Two winners will be chosen to win one of growing kits which are upcycled from Stoneyfield Farm yogurt containers.  The contest ends at midnight tonight (April 19th)...sorry for the last minute notice, but you definitely have time to enter!  Head over to Simple Butta and enter now!

The second giveaway is for a Soap Nut Starter Kit which includes one 100 gram bag of SoapNuts, one 1 ounce bottle of essential oils, one extra wash bag, and one sample bag to share with a friend.  What the heck is a soap nut you ask?  Well here's your answer:
Soapnuts are a TOTALLY NATUAL DRIED FRUIT with natural cleaning properties. Yep, it sounds crazy -- but it's TRUE! Soapnuts aren't actually a nut at all, they are simply the fruit of a tree (Sapindus Mukorossi), found primarily in the Himilayas. And they are an EXCELLENT alternative to traditional laundry detergents and cleaners.
I totally want this kit!  This giveaway closes at noon on Thursday.  Head over to Simple Butta again and enter this giveaway as well!

There are lots of ways to enter, it's very simple and straightforward!  I will be blogging about a few more Earth Day activities really soon, so stand by for that!

Cultures Giveaway

I'm trying to add a new fold in my "living local" portfolio (if there is such a thing) -- fermentation.

I've partnered with Cultures for Health and I'm presently brewing my first batch of kombucha with my Cultures for Health kombucha starter.

A Kombucha starter (aka Kombucha scoby) consists of yeast and bacteria existing in a symbiotic relationship. When combined with brewed tea, sugar, water and allowed to ferment for 5 to 30 days, the resulting Kombucha tea beverage has a slightly carbonated texture and is packed full of b-vitamins.
So far I've been brewing my kombucha for almost a week and already have a baby culture in place. When I return from camping on Sunday I think I will take out the cultures and prepare the liquid for drinking. I'm brewing in a one quart jar now and can't wait to brew a gallon.

I also have water kefir grains to try as well!

Anyway, Cultures for Health would like to offer my readers a chance at winning any 3 starters of your choice at their cost!! You can choose from a variety of yogurt starters, kombucha, kefir, sourdough, or buttermilk starter.

Click here to enter this awesome giveaway. The giveaway will close next Thursday, August 20 at 11:59 pm EST. The winner will be announced August 21.
