The Babies Have Arrived!

No, not me!  A few of the Jenness Farm goats have given birth to seven new babies!  The kids and I stopped by tonight and they were so cute inside the store in their pack 'n' plays.  Does this mean it's almost spring?  Wishful thinking...

So congratulations goes to:
Lily- 1 boy
Johanna- 2 girls, 1 boy
Prudence- 2 girls,1 boy

Feel free to stop by the shop and view the newbies!  They will be in the soap shop until Sunday, Jan. 24th and the farm store is open Wed. - Sun., 10am - 6pm.  More pictures can be found on the Jenness Farm Facebook page.

While you're visiting the farm store, be sure to browse through their 90+ varieties of goat milk soap as well as their other bath and body care products and soy candles (my favorite soap is their Peppermint Pick Me Up, use it everyday!).  Also, Jenness Farms' lip balm was named "best of" by NH Magazine, Jan 2010!
"A rare feat, but it happens - the staff members chose a unanimous favorite. Jenness Farm may be known for its goat milk soaps, but the lip balm is just as good. Not too waxy, good smelling without being overpowering, and it's light on the lips while still getting the job done. Comes ...in SPF varieties as well."
Something I'm adding to my "must try" list.  Jenness Farm will also be attending the upcoming (1/23) Seacoast Eat Local Winter Farmers' Market in Rollinsford at the Wentworth Greenhouses.

psst...don't tell anyone...

Upcoming Oct. Events

This is just a highlight of a few (awesome) upcoming events.

October 17-18, 10 am - 6 pm
Jenness Farm Harvest Festival
77 Garland Road, Nottingham, NH 03290

Join us on October 17th & 18th for our annual harvest festival at the farm. We'll be hosting an open farm weekend with lots of fun for all. There are new baby goats (our rare breed Arapawas), new piglets, new sheep, turkeys, guinea hens, ducks, chickens and of course the frisbee dog - Rhun. Pat's cider Donuts will be here and Skip wil be making the donuts while you watch. Dueling Roosters Farm wil be here with fudge, fall gifts and wool. Chicken Foot Pottery will have new pottery for sale. We'll have cheese, jam & jelly, and Cajeta (goat milk caramel) samples. Caleb and Chloe will be here with fresh popcorn to sell for eating or feeding the animals. Sugar Momma's Maple Farm will be here with syrup, maple popcorn, maple soft serve ice cream, maple cotton candy and much more. Much for to see and do! Feel free to bring a picnic and enjoy the day.

The movie, Food, Inc., has a few more showings in the area. This is definitely on my "to-do" list and it should be on yours as well. Here's a brief synopsis:

FOOD INC. asks us how much do we really know about the food we buy at our local supermarkets? We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, insecticide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. FOOD INC. reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.
Food, Inc. will be showing on Thursday October 15th at 6 PM at the MUB II at UNH.

Join Discovery Author Gale Carey, Professor of Nutritional Sciences, and Joanne Burke, Clinical Assistant Professor of Nutritional Sciences with the UNH Dietetic Interns for discussion following this provocative film. Food, Inc. exposes America's industrialized food system and its effect on our environment, health, economy and workers' rights. Hungry for change? Join the conversation. Cosponsored by the Memorial Union Building, MUSO and the Discovery Program. Ticket Price of $2 will apply.

There will also be showings on Friday, October 16th at 10:30 am and Sunday, October 18 at 4:15 pm at the Portsmouth Music Hall in association with the NH Film Festival. More info can be found at the NHFF website.

Farmer's Market Itch

With being back to school, myself and the kids, life, as you know, has been quite busy! I haven't been to a farmers' market in weeks and I was itching to go! So despite the rain the kids and I packed up and headed over to the North Berwick Farmers' Market (check out their revamped website). The NBFM has three more markets left this season, so if you haven't trekked over to North Berwick, maybe you should! Here's what I bought:

On the way home from the market I swung by one of my favorite "roadside" farm stands, Parcell Farm in Rochester, NH. (More info and directions, see the bottom of this post.) I bought:
  • more leeks
  • Swiss chard
  • celery
  • kale
As a side note, Parcell Farm will only be open this weekend, and the next three Thur-Saturdays, with their last day being October 31. So be sure to swing by soon if you want some delicious local popcorn!

I have a whole chicken in the freezer from Newfields Own Produce and I think we'll have that for dinner this weekend. I'll cook it in the crockpot like I always do! On the NBFM website they have a nice section for recipes and I'll be trying the Lemony Leek Risotto to go with the chicken. I'm hungry just thinking about it!

My other culinary plans for the weekend include making a leek & potato soup, kale chips, Swiss chard crustless quiche (which I promise to blog about!), and making chicken broth with the chicken carcass (hence the local celery). Busy week, high expections! Here's hoping I at least get one of these tasks done! (Oh, and if I forget to blog about it, you need to try the spaghetti squash casserole on Penny-wise People's blog, very good stuff!)

What local things have you been up to?
